Summary:
The attached ordinance amends the Land Development Code to revise the development standards for accessory dwelling units, townhomes, and multifamily dwelling units. These amendments are proposed as one part of a larger overall initiative to increase the supply of market rate and affordable housing in Orlando.
On March 20, 2018, staff presented a workshop to the Municipal Planning Board (MPB) to discuss these strategies in detail. On May 15, 2018 the MPB recommended approval of the following three code amendments that are all addressed in the attached ordinance:
- Amend the code to update the standards for building small apartment buildings (eight units or less), or small/micro units (500 sq. ft. or less) in multi-family housing developments. (Case # LDC2018-10003)
- Streamline the review process and amending our standards to encourage the development of townhomes, balanced with ensuring townhomes are designed to high standards to protect the integrity of our neighborhoods. (Case # LDC2018-10002)
- Amend the code to allow for Accessory Dwelling Units (sometimes called a “granny flat”, accessory cottage or accessory apartment) in all single family zoning districts provided the owner complies with the minimum lot size and necessary parking. (Case # LDC2018-10004)
