Summary:
In 2007, the Steinway Society of Central Florida began offering a free 10-week "Pianos for Kidz" program, at the Dr. J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center, to youth from the Parramore community. Today, the program not only collaborates with Parramore Kidz Zone at the Dr. J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center, but it also operates at Shiloh Baptist Church, the ACE School in Parramore, the Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center and Frontline Outreach.
The program's goal is to change lives through music. All books and materials are provided to the children free of charge. Youth who have participated in the program's piano lessons for three years and qualify receive a gently used piano, on loan, throughout their participation in the "Piano Bank" program. Eventually they get to keep their pianos, free of charge.
Mayor Dyer will invite Ms. Brenda March, the City's Children and Education Manager, to the podium. Ms. March will introduce Gary and Kathy Grimes, President and Secretary, respectively, of the Steinway Society of Central Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Grimes will name Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Steinway Society of Central Florida, in recognition of his ongoing support and inspiration for the "Pianos for Kidz" program. |
