Summary:
The City of Orlando via the Families, Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded first place for medium-sized cities in the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) 2016 National Education Pathways with a Purpose Initiative. The $40,000 award honors outstanding leadership in advancing college and career readiness and recognizes FPR’s work supporting college readiness and employment among Orlando youth.
FPR intends to invest the funds in its college access, youth employment and My Brother's Keeper Orlando programs, to include paying salaries to employed youth, covering the cost of youth participation in training and conferences, providing college scholarships and college savings accounts for youth, paying for work clothes for youth employees, and so forth.
Since FPR’s non-profit organization the Orlando Community & Youth Trust ("the Trust") receives various grants for these same purposes and therefore has structures in place to administer these types of grant awards and expenses, it seeks authorization of the Orlando City Council for the Trust to receive and administer the award on behalf of FPR.
Since the Trust is operated by City staff, including by-laws that require the FPR Director to serve as Board Chair and the FPR Fiscal Manager to serve as Treasurer, the City inherently manages and provides oversight to the organization.
By approving this agenda item, City Council authorizes the Mayor to request the U.S. Conference of Mayors to disburse the funds to the Trust to administer the proceeds of the grant to support FPR’s college access, youth employment and My Brother's Keeper Orlando programs. While the grant does not have any reporting requirements at this time, should anything be required, it shall be prepared and provided by Trust. |
