Summary:
The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) has awarded the City of Orlando first place designation for medium-sized cities in the 2016 National Education Pathways with a Purpose Initiative. The award honors mayoral commitment and outstanding leadership in advancing both college and career readiness.
The award recognizes Mayor Dyer's Children's Initiative, operated by the Families, Parks and Recreation Department, including FPR's cradle-to-career pipeline (Parramore Kidz Zone); academic support programs for children at City recreation centers; 21st Century Community Learning Centers at city middle schools operated by After-School All-Stars; and 150 AmeriCorps members that FPR deploys to middle and high schools to support the academic and career success of youth who attend those schools. It also recognizes FPR for employing approximately 625 youth each year, both as City staff and via grants to FPR's non-profit organization, the Orlando Community & Youth Trust, Inc.
Mayor Dyer will invite FPR Director Lisa Early to the podium, who will say a few words about FPR Children's Initiative, and introduce Stephanie Nellons-Paige,
Vice President, National Engagement, USA Funds. Ms. Nellons-Paige will describe the award and why Orlando was selected, and present a check in the amount of $40,000 to the City, followed by photographs in front of the dais. |
