Summary:
On August 28, 2013, Chase Smith, longtime Aide to District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan, passed away. To memorialize Chase, Commissioner Sheehan has proposed placing a "Pink Bunny" statue at Lake Como Park and another at Colonialtown, as well as pink tabebuia trees at Lake Como and Langford Park, as appropriate memorials for Chase who, every Easter, dressed up as a pink bunny and participated in neighborhood Easter egg hunts.
Per the City's Monuments and Memorials Policy (attached), the proposed memorial has now been approved by all required City boards and departments, culminating in approval by the Families, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board on June 21, 2016 (see application and minutes attached). Funding for the purchase and maintenance of the memorials will be paid for via the Chase Smith Memorial Fund held by Strengthen Orlando.
Since the memorial is classified a "City-Sponsored Large Memorial" that is not in a "Cornerstone Park," the final step in the approval process is City Council consent. By approving this agenda item, City Council approves the placement of a Pink Bunny Memorial statue, one each at Lake Como Park and Colonialtown, as well as pink tabebuia trees at Lake Como and Langford Park, memorializing Chase Smith. |
