Summary:
In 2006, the Orlando City Council approved an Agreement with the Community Foundation of Central Florida, Inc. (now known as Central Florida Foundation) establishing the Legacy Trust for Orlando Children ("Legacy Trust"). The Legacy Trust is a donor-advised fund whose purpose is to make grants to programs that improve the lives of low-income children in the City of Orlando. The initial neighborhood targeted for investment was the Parramore Heritage community, via Parramore Kidz Zone. Since the Legacy Trust was established, funding has been received from a variety of sources, including the City of Orlando and grants and contributions from foundations, businesses and individuals.
To date, grants have been made from the Legacy Trust to support a variety of programs and services offered by non-profit, faith-based, and governmental organizations that benefit children residing in the Parramore Heritage community. These organizations have included but were not limited to: New Image Youth Center, the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County, and Community Coordinated Care for Children. The annual evaluation has documented services provided to thousands of children in the neighborhood as a result of Legacy Trust investments, ranging from free tutoring, to youth employment, college access assistance, athletic programs, pre-kindergarten programs, health care services and emergency economic assistance for families facing eviction or other emergencies. Evaluators have also documented corresponding declines in juvenile arrest and teen pregnancy rates in Parramore, as well as across-the-board improvements in academic performance among Parramore children.
By approving this agenda item, the Orlando City Council will authorize a grant in the amount of $75,000 to the Central Florida Foundation, to be deposited into the Legacy Trust for Orlando Children and granted to organizations that provide free tutoring, youth employment, college access assistance, athletic programs, child care, pre-kindergarten programs, health care services and emergency economic assistance for families in Parramore. Funding for this grant has been budgeted and approved by City Council as part of the FPR budget. |
