Summary:
The Transportation Engineering Division maintains 487 traffic signals in the City of Orlando, and each intersection requires a sophisticated traffic signal controller to operate the intersection. Transportation Engineering has been replacing the old existing copper wire and serial fiber optic communications network with state of the art fiber Ethernet communications systems to increase data capacity and improve reliability, and the next step is to replace controllers. Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has agreed to fund up to $400,000 to upgrade the traffic signal controllers from serial to Ethernet communications at 129 intersections to maximize the net communications network. FDOT will also fund the purchase of 23 closed circuit TV cameras in improve the City’s ability to monitor and manage traffic at key City intersections. The City will purchase the controller upgrade kits and install using City staff, and FDOT will reimburse the City for the purchase cost. |
