Staff is proposing an amendment to the high-rise building identification sign section of the Sign Code (Chapter 64 of the Land Development Code), which will allow different messages in the Downtown when both signs are not visible from any single vantage point.  Further changes are also proposed to the Section to create a purpose for High-Rise Building Identification Signs, and allow up to two such signs per building (the current verbiage in the Code allows ONLY two signs, which would preclude a single high-rise sign).

The Downtown/CRA has fielded multiple inquiries to allow more than one corporate headquarters in any one particular building, and the naming rights/high-rise signs are powerful economic tools to secure headquarters.  Supporting the location of corporate headquarters within our Downtown is a desirable goal of both the City at large and Downtown interests.  

So long as both signs are not visible from any single vantage point, staff believes that allowing for two such signs is a reasonable request in order to further the goal of accommodating additional corporate headquarters within our Downtown.  We also believe that requiring that the different messages be not visible from any single vantage point will further the goal of reducing overall visual clutter, as the signs will never been seen “together”.
