Summary:
The University of Central Florida (UCF) Center for Public and Nonprofit Management received a grant from the Orange County Neighborhood Preservation and Revitalization Division to help reduce crime and enhance safety for residents. With this funding, UCF is expanding its "Walking School Bus" program to five schools in Orange County, including two that serve children who attend Orlando's Colonialtown Neighborhood Center and Fern Creek Elementary School, and those who attend Hankins Park Recreation Site and Washington Shores Elementary School.
The Walking School Bus is a statewide program designed to help students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, that live within a two mile radius of their school, to walk to and from school safely, and to encourage physical activity through walking. City staff and local adult volunteers (screened by the City and recruited/trained by UCF), will walk with the children from the school to the recreation center every day after school.
Through involvement with the Walking School Bus program, children will be safer, learn pedestrian safety and engage in increased physical activity by walking to the sites from their schools.
