Florida Department of Health Afterschool Meal Program

In January 2013, the Families, Parks and Recreation Department received City Council approval to apply for federal funding for after school meals via the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Childcare Food Programs. The application was approved and the permanent contract with the Florida Department of Health (DOH) was signed effective October 2013. With Orange County School Food and Nutrition Services providing food daily, FPR served 30,055 snacks and 79,235 suppers to children at 17 after school locations citywide (see attached list) during the 2013-2014 school year. 

FPR has received a memorandum as notice from the DOH regarding 2014 deadlines in preparation for the new DOH contract year (October 1, 2014-September 30, 2015). 

USDA meal reimbursement rates effective July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015 will provide the City $ 3.23 per meal served. These funds will be distributed directly to Orange County Public Schools, which will prepare and deliver food daily to the 17 sites.

Recommended Action:
Approval to submit annual information update and certification form and required documents to the Florida Department of Health to continue the after school meals program, as well as approval of Delegation of Signing Authority so that the Director of Families, Parks and Recreation is authorized to renew the Child Care Food Program contract annually without further City Council approval.
