Summary:
The Chapter 57 Review Board (Board) is one of the City’s citizen boards and one of its responsibilities is to foster mutual understanding and respect and to encourage equality of treatment for and to prevent discrimination of Orlando citizens.
At its June 19, 2014, the Board reviewed the proposed amendments to Articles I and V of Chapter 57. The Board voted unanimously to support amending those articles of the code to include gender identity as a protected class against discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations in the City limits of Orlando. Adding this protected class gives City of Orlando residents additional protection.
The Board also supported recommendations which clarified the Human Relations Official’s role to initiate complaints on behalf of the City of Orlando and clarified the Board’s options to hear discrimination complaints after a determination has been made by the Human Relations Official on the merit of a complaint in employment, housing and public accommodations. The change regarding the Human Relations Official’s role was requested by HUD which provides annual funding for investigation of housing complaints and grants the City status as a Fair Housing Assistance Program.
Previous action regarding the amending of Chapter 57 Code of the City of Orlando is as follows:
On July 28, 2014, City Council approved the first reading of the subject ordinance. |
