Summary:
The Corporation for National and Community Service's Florida State Office has requested the City of Orlando to apply for an extension of the second year of sponsorship to receive up to eleven AmeriCorps VISTA member positions to help implement initiatives that are part of "Mayor Buddy Dyer's Cities of Service Plan: ORLANDO CARES". The ten AmeriCorps VISTA members and one AmeriCorps VISTA Leader would work with the Office of Community Affairs and Human Relations staff, Orlando Cares lead partners and Orlando residents to build the capacity of ORLANDO CARES' youth programs during a period of one year. The term of the AmeriCorps VISTA project would be April 20, 2014 through May 2, 2015.
Ten AmeriCorps VISTA members and one AmeriCorps VISTA Leader will be requested from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to implement initiatives in three focus areas: improving 3rd grade reading scores, increasing preschool enrollment and early literacy, and increasing graduation rates. The VISTAs will support programs that assist at-risk children/youth.
ORLANDO CARES, aligns with the mission of the CNCS, to improve lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering, specifically in the focus areas of youth education and youth crime prevention. The grant does not provide a monetary award to the City. The Office of Community Affairs and Human Relations will be responsible for recruitment, placement, training and supervision of the AmeriCorps VISTA members for one year and reporting the AmeriCorps VISTA members' outcomes to CNCS throughout the term of their assignment with the City.
