Summary:
Recently, the City of Orlando completed a new vision for Loch Haven Cultural Park as part of a National Endowment for the Arts sponsored effort to plan for improvements to the Park. The crowning piece of that planning effort is a proposed artwork that would create better awareness of the nearby park at the Florida Hospital SunRail Station. It is hoped that this particular work of art could also spur further aesthetic enhancements to the SunRail corridor, not unlike the art work of the "Love Train" in Philadelphia.
In 2015, the City Arts Coordinator, Florida Hospital Representatives and staff completed a national call for artists process where Martha Lent, a local artist, was selected for her dynamic proposal for a painted mural on the eastern wall facing the Florida Hospital SunRail Station of the McRae Parking Garage. This particular proposal consists of a colorful and beautiful work of art which features a painted aquatic scene that represents the lakes that surround Loch Haven Cultural Park. The overall work is also uplifting - a primary goal of Florida Hospital in partnering in the project - and adds a vibrancy that will enhance the placemaking of this commuter rail station.
The proposal is a system of several aluminum panels, which are to be hand painted and assembled together within a space frame. The framing technique is somewhat similar to the art on the northern facade of the Orlando Utility Commission (OUC) headquarters for comparison; however, the proposed art is approximately three times the size of the existing OUC art in order for the installation to be proportional to the wall on which it is placed.
Attached is the agreement with the artist for its purchase and installation, and a picture of the art concept. A subsequent donation agreement to Florida Hospital will come forward via separate action at a future council date, which will allow Florida Hospital to assume liability and maintenance responsibilities for the art work. |
