Summary:
In 2013, the City of Orlando was awarded grant funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service, via Volunteer Florida, for Orlando Partnership for School Success (OPASS). As a result of this program, 32 AmeriCorps members are offering academic and social support to over 1,100 students at 4 city middle schools. Last year, program results were as follows: 87% of participating students improved math and reading performance; 92% improved school attendance; and there was an 81% reduction in suspensions and expulsions.
Last week, based on the program's outstanding performance, Volunteer Florida announced that the City of Orlando was named the 2014-15 AmeriCorps Program of the Year for the State of Florida.
Mayor Dyer will call upon Lisa Early, Director of Families, Parks and Recreation, to come to the podium to present the award. |
