Summary:
On June 25, the City of Orlando and the SEIU began negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, to replace the agreement expiring on September 16, 2013. The parties initially reached an agreement, but it was not ratified by bargaining unit members in the White Collar and Supervisory Units. The parties returned to negotiations, and have agreed on all issues except for wages. On December 23, impasse was declared. The parties agreed to waive the available special magistrate procedure and proceed directly to resolution of the outstanding wage issue by the City Council.
Under state law, City Council is required to schedule a hearing during which the parties must explain their position on this issue and thereafter Council must take action on the disputed issue as it deems to be in the public interest, including the interest of the public employees involved.
